Psi

Hello Brit,
My name is Olivier Wright. For the past 5 years, I have been self-producing my first feature film called Ψ (psi), a blend of fiction and documentary exploring free will and choice. I was recently joined on this adventure by producer Eve Brémond (Box Fish Productions) who strongly believes in this project and is helping me achieve the final stages. The film is fully shot, edited and scored, and there is now only one piece of the puzzle left: asking you to be the main voice of the film as its narrator.
Ψ tells the story of a psychologist who goes to meet 5 "parallel lives" of one of her patients to try and understand how each one, having made different choices in the past, became who they are. Doing so brings her to question her own past and why she never pursued her own lifelong ambition to become an actress. We never see her in the film, but her voice guides us through it, reflecting on insights provided by real-world scientists (such as Max Tegmark at MIT and Barry Schwartz at Berkeley) as we journey through the 5 cities, discovering their art and architecture (from Alexander Calder, Eila Hiltunen, Anish Kapor and many other artists who support the project - full list here). The film is a contemplation on fate, randomness, regret, happiness and our place in the universe.

Why you?
How would this go?
The reason I would like you to voice the psychologist is because this psychologist would actually be… you - a parallel version of you, the Brit Marling you could be today if you hadn't pursued acting, but still gone on to Georgetown only to study psychology instead of economics. And so, beyond your voice, I'm really interest in who you are as a person, because it all connects to the themes of the film:
  • the multiple paths you considered from an early age, split between your interest in art and your parents encouraging you to focus on academics;
  • your studying at Georgteown and interning as an investment banker;
  • the choice you made to go to LA and change the course of your life;
  • your determination to not compromise with your ideals;
  • the similar themes you have explored in some of your films, in particular "Another Earth" and "I Origins."
  • and the fact that you are an actress in this life becomes intrinsic to the story: when the audience listens to the "Dr. Marling" question her past, they will know how her life would have turned out had she pursued her passion.
In short, you are, in my mind, the ideal person to voice this psychologist, because this psychologist, in another universe, is you.
  • This would only be voice-over.
  • The recording could take a half-day.
  • It can be done at a time and place that is convenient for you.
  • I'm open to your suggestions on your character's lines.
The film in its current form (in which the psychologist is called Natalie Forester and voiced by a friend) got a test screening at MIT in Cambridge and the reception was extremely positive, both by the audience and by the early critical reception. This gave me confidence the film could go to festivals and find distribution.
You subsequent involvement in the project would be entirely up to you. On the one hand,

This project been an incredible journey so far and it would mean so much if you were to be a part of it.
Thank you for your time and consideration, I hope we can be in touch soon.

Olivier
